Shoes Every Woman Should (and Shouldn't) Own

Let's be serious for a moment (as serious as a blog post can get), because shoes are an important part of everyone's lives whether they like it or not. Sure, I could get away with not wearing any, but then I'd run the risk of stepping on a needle walking around Main & Hastings. I'd also fall victim to the 'No Shoes? No Shirt? No Service' policy at fancy establishments and a girl's got needs to feed. And not to mention the nasty callouses I'd get. Bye bye boyfriend massaging my feet after a long, hard day of work (not that this even happens, but I'm sure the chances would be majorly slimmed).

So, what about them shoes? I am extremely picky and price-conscious when it comes to shoes. I should probably be a little less price-conscious because they need to be regarded on the level of an article of clothing. Otherwise, I'd be saying I only need 5 pieces of clothing to mix and match throughout the seasons. Yeah, not happening. But knowing exactly what you need vs. want is the beginning. Here's to the beginning of my shoe journey. I've narrowed down 6 types of shoes that I definitely need in my closet, and even 2 types that I can skip looking at.

SHOULD OWN

2. Classic Oxford

Not a huge fan of the ballerina flat, so this is my alternative. Yes, they are a bit chunkier, but that's the appeal to them. The ballerina flat has no support for your foot, and in turn can really eff up your posture/spine/walking style. Oxfords, on the other hand, usually have a good amount of support and most come with a slight heel (win!).

My suggestions:

3. Work-Appropriate (Everyday) Heel

I guess this will depend on what your work is. Oh yeah, all of this is shot to shit if you work in the fashion industry. So, I'll classify 'work' as an office that I've seen on television, like Ally McBeal or something. So I'd go with a thicker heel so that you don't give your co-workers the wrong impression that you've got a transitionary day-night job. Work-appropriate heels also don't have to be worn just for work. These are the heels that you can buy groceries, ride a bike etc. in. Everyday heels, if you will.

My suggestions:

4. Night Heel

My goal is to find a job where night heels are everyday heels. No, not street-walking.

My suggestions:

5. Basic sandal

6. Running sneaker

No matter how hard you try to fool your brain, you're not going to do anyone any favours by running in your $400 Common Projects. Like my Mother says, the track route is not a runway (I half agree).

My suggestions:

Reebok's EasyTone. Not only will you get your regular cardio workout, but it tones and strengthens your leg and butt muscles while you're at it. Definitely does everyone a favour.

SHOULDN'T OWN

1. Wedge Heels

I don't care if they're combed underbelly Egyptian mountain pony YSL leopard printed, I say down with wedge heels! I'm going to get a lot of crap for this but I'll say it anyway. I'll ease into it by paraphrasing what my Aunt once told me about wedges: you look like you've got a handicap, the 1 leg longer than the other type. Also, no man likes a wedge heel. Not that I dress for men (I dress for women, but that's an entirely different article), but think of a man's opinion as driven by nature and evolution. It's their instinct and they can't explain it, they just have an inherent hate for wedge heels. Don't fight with human nature.

I guess there is a bit of leeway around this. If the wedge has a little cutout that defines a heel, then I'm ok with that. For example.

2. Kitten Heels

Who ever thought that a skinny 1-2 inch heel ever looked good? It's like you can't decide to be a flat or a high heel. Kitten heels are the equivalent to a wishy-washy girl that can't make up her mind, and we all have our (negative) opinions on THOSE types of girls. Be decisive. Know what you want to be. A freakin flat or a high heel, and stick with it. No wishy-washiness allowed.

I even found a pair of Lanvin ones. Still, no.

I'm not going to get into the majorly 'shouldn't owns' (i.e. Crocs for activities other than gardening, Uggs, etc. but those are common sense). If there are any other types of shoes that I need to own and not own, let me know!
