This editorial is more than just another editorial for us. If you have been following our editorials, you will notice this is our first male editorial. Believe it or not, it's way easier finding a female model than a male one, I don't need to elaborate. So our greatest thanks to our model, Wesley Fields, who took the risk of going deep into the woods with us (check out our behind the scenes pictures). We named this editorial "The Great Escape" just as Photographer, Jordan Petryk, envisioned it through his lens, and Alyssa Kwan through her magnificent wardrobe choices.
In every editorial, we try to incorporate a theme that represents a fixture of the human psyche, as therein lies a great story and it's easy for everyone to relate to. This time, we pictured Wes as a person with authority who left his comfort zone to go into the wilderness - we didn't want to call it 'Runaway Prince' or 'Prince of Thieves' because it's cheesy and we know you would get our point anyway without having to try so hard.
The feel we were going for in this editorial was 'dirty' but 'classic'. We emphasized the softness and elegance of the wardrobe, styled cleverly to blend with Wes's masculine features and rebellious look. Alyssa played with layers of solid colours: a Barbour coat, sweater and shirt, mixed with cropped cotton drop-crotch pants (my fave). Classic doesn't have to be boring.
What also makes this editorial special is that Jordan experimented with three different cameras and a flash feature. We refused to rely on and be spoiled by the comfort of modern technology that is digital, and decided to explore medium B&W format as well - Jordan even built his own B&W studio in his apartment and we manually developed the film ourselves. We enjoyed the process so much and were satisfied with the result. We have finally come to terms with the fact that modern technology is not always the answer to everything. Nothing could ever beat the timeless beauty of black & white photography. Our photo shoot results went so well we had difficulty in choosing the best ones to post (if it were up to me I would say all of them!).
Moreover, in the editing process, we stuck with the classic frame template and let the pictures speak for themselves. Even though initially we wanted to focus on B&W photography, we allowed some pictures to be edited in mono-color to give it more variety.
Aghh, we can't wait to experiment with another photo shoot!
