When I saw some of Paris Kain's (whose jewellery line is called Abraxas Rex) herkimer diamond pieces online, I was hit with that instant need to get my hands on one. So, I checked Barney's for the pricing and was dumbfounded to see that a herkimer diamond necklace was a little under $3000USD. Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh, yeah... no. I guess working with names such as Calvin Klein and Alexander Wang has gotten to Paris Kain's head, but hey, she's worked with them and I haven't... and if I could get away with pricing my jewelelry at $3000USD, I would... probably.
A little googling has informed me that a herkimer diamond isn't so much a diamond at all, but in fact just double-terminated quartz crystals. I mean, sure it's a little more rare than your everyday crystal, but not $2900USD more. I'm not usually such a stickler for overpriced jewellery if it's super unique and is of amazing quality, but this time I just did not understand. Maybe it's because I feel like I can make it myself... so I hopped over to eBay and found auctions where they're selling herkimer diamonds in a bundle for less than $30. Combine that with some ring settings, or necklace mounts and I'm sure you can make enough jewellery for you and your friends for under $20 a pop.
Anyway, the main reason I am into herkimer diamonds so much is because they're just so damn shiny and pretty to look at. What? I'm a girl, I'm allowed my 'ogling shiny things' moments now and then. However, they're a big thing in Wiccan and New Age belief systems because apparently they enhance dream recall, connections between astral planes and "manifestation energy" which Wikipedia tells me is energy which helps makes dreams, hopes and plans "manifest" or come to fruition... there are even MORE mystical powers that Wikipedia does not wish to list. I want in on the secrets. So now I sound like I want one of these because I am some cosmic lady that relies on mystics to form my future. Oh, whatever. It doesn't hurt to try.
