Yuima Nakazato S/S 2010

I have always been intrigued by pieces of art/clothing/anything, really, that can be twisted, folded or pieced together so that it becomes your own sort of design. Yuima Nakazato gives us this opportunity as he applies a new technique called 'metal knit' that uses flexible hard metal in his latest S/S 2010 collection. With this technique, solid plane circles can be transformed into 3D clothing and shoes. Leather and zippers are the main elements of this astronomy-themed collection. Think origami, but instead of paper you've got leather with zippers and instead of leaving the completed pieces for display, you wear it. Nakazato's work is inspired by contemporary Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, whose name you may recall from the Brooklyn Bridge waterfall installation and by James Turrell, whose works are concerned with light and space, who is most famous for his Roden Crater project.

Nakazato's S/S 2010 collection "appeals to perception and the real existence of light, that is usually not considered, is tangible. Shape and line blends into light and vice versa. Furthermore, the colour and the material express the light from space." (Showroom Antwerp Press Release). His latest lookbook, photographed by Isaac Papiashvili, does an amazing job translating the feel of his collection through the photos. I'm not normally a fan of black on black on black on more black, which gives me such a hard time, squinting and adjusting my computer screen to try to understand what's going on, but this is one time in which it just works, and I can't really see it being done any other way.

If you're not already sold on Nakazato, you should check out his previous works because he's won several awards for them, including an innovation award from Ann Demeulemeester. And if that's not reason enough, then it's hopeless to try to convince anyone further.

More pics after the jump.
