Jewelry is definitely not my field of expertise. But as a visual person, I always have an opinion about things that are visually appealing, like the new series of 14 necklaces by Swedish jewelry artist Hanna Hedman, which was exhibited at the Ornamentum Gallery in New York last July.
I was stunned when I stumbled upon her collection on the gallery's website. A perfect embodiment of oxidized silver, copper, powder-coat, paint and synthetic fibers. Hanna Hedman is presenting herself as more of an artist rather than just a fashion accessories designer. Her installation reminds me of the hand drawn illustrations from the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale books I used to have when I was a kid. If Hans Christian Andersen shared his story through his writing, Hanna shares hers through her jewelry.
“What you tell is not always what you have experienced” is the title of her latest series of necklaces. Hanna Hedman says it is 'exploring the borders between lie, escapism, reality and fantasy.' I call it fine crafted masterpieces, not just another pretty necklace inside a glass display box.
